The July Flock
After completing the chicken house, we received a call from the inlaws that 3 of the June flock had died. Somehow they had gotten themselves stuck behind their hutch and they hadn't noticed when they went to put them up. Most likely, they had dehydrated and expired.
Day-old July Flock |
Our first flock consisted of ten New Hampshire Reds and four assorted Frizzles. Nonnie and Papa had added on 3 each of Reds and Dominiques, which everybody knows are really called Dominickers. Well, two of the Reds and one Dominicker were the ones that died, so I ordered 8 new Dominickers and two more Frizzles, one red and one white, so we'd have two of each color. {I had to fight hard for those Frizzles, let me tell you} We could replace Nonnie's lost Dominicker, give her two of our Reds and we'd have more variety. Right? Cool.
Well Nonnie had been making noises about wishing she'd have some Frizzles. Shucks. They ARE the cutest. I think she'd fallen in love with Dolly from the June Flock and she had half a mind to keep her. Well Hubs told me she can't have Dolly, because frankly she's everyone's favorite, but I could add on a few more Frizzles to my July order and we'd give Nonnie a few white ones. She'd be so thrilled with the surprise! The July order was now up to 14.
Last Thursday, the July flock arrived via our local post office. At 9:57am, Nonnie called me to ask if they were here. I told her no, but I'd called the post office the day before. They knew to call me. At 9:58, the PO called and said my chickens were in! They must've heard Nonnie tapping her feet.
Nonnie and Papa met us at the chickie hutch when we got back. Surprise Nonnie! We got you some white Frizzles! Aren't yo

u excited???
She replied sweetly, "I'll just keep Dolly."
"Uh, no, Dolly's coming to live here! She's everyone's favorite! Even Chris said so."
Said the Hufflepuff to his wife and mom, "Uh, I don't remember saying that."
Thanks, Babe, for letting me be the bad guy! Long story short, we're keeping Dolly. Period.
